Chapter Seven

She hadn’t meant to say those words. Vanessa had meant to plaster herself to John and kiss the snot out of him.

It was all that talk about their perfect engagement parties and weddings. That’s what she was blaming her almost-lapse in judgment on. Where did he get off, describing her perfect day? Furthermore, where did he get off sharing his with her?

And, oh man, she’d loved his. In fact, she’d been completely in sync with everything he talked about. No offense to Jess, but the event her best friend was planning was going to rival the royal wedding. Sure, all that fluff and decorations and event planners and tulle was fine and dandy, but kind of overkill in Vanessa’s opinion.

A small, intimate ceremony on the beach, with only very close friends and family, followed by dancing under the stars, on the other hand, sounded amazing. Dancing with John under the stars…

“You want to get drunk?”

His deep, curious voice pulled her out of what, she was sure, would have been a fantastic fantasy. “I mean, we don’t have to get obliterated or anything, but since we’re in this room with nothing to do but plan your sister’s engagement party….”

“Right, the engagement party.” He rolled his eyes and she tried not to laugh at his pained expression. “When you put it that way, a little booze does sound pretty good. One problem though.”

She cocked her head. “What?”

“All I see are empty kegs back there.” He pointed to the far end of the room. “And I spotted a ton of mixers on the shelves. But no alcohol.”

Her lips twitched as a slow smile began. “Mike actually keeps most of the alcohol locked in a different room in the basement. But I happen to know that the emergency kit is hidden in here.”

“Emergency kit?”

She nodded. “There are always nights that make one or more of us want to bash a couple of mugs over someone’s head. Instead, the emergency kit is there to save us.”

She tried to stand, but wobbled. Tingles pricked at her leg, alerting her to the fact that she’d been sitting on that leg too long and it had fallen asleep. John reached out a hand to steady her, but as soon as their fingers connected, a different kind of tingling began.

Why did his touch have this effect on her? She’d dated her last boyfriend for two years and never once did she feel an iota of what John made her feel with a simple brush of his hand.

“You okay?” he asked.

No. She’d never wanted someone like this before. “I’m fine,” she lied. “Leg’s a little numb, that’s all.”

“Must be this comfy floor,” he said with a wink.

Relieved that he didn’t call her out on her second stumble at his touch, she limped over to the shelves. Simultaneously shaking her leg out and moving all the right boxes around, she found the emergency kit exactly where it was supposed to be—nestled inside a large box that Mike had jokingly labeled “nonalcoholic mixers.
